After leaving the Armed Forces, Martin found himself struggling to adjust to civilian life. Without a stable home, everything became harder.

‘’Before Ready4Home, I was moving from place to place, sometimes staying in hostels, sometimes on a friend’s floor. After serving my country, I never thought I’d end up homeless. But when you leave the military, it can feel like you’re on your own. I was lost and had nowhere to go.’’

The Challenges of Homelessness as a Veteran

Martin’s background as a veteran came with it’s own unique struggles.

‘’Civvy street is a different world. I had discipline, I had skills, but without an address and stability, none of that mattered. Employers wouldn’t look at me, and I felt embarrassed to even admit I was homeless. I went from being part of a team to feeling completely isolated.’’

The emotions impact

The loss of stability and belonging had a deep effect on Martin’s wellbeing.

‘’I was proud of my service, but homelessness stripped that pride away. Every day felt like a battle, but this time I didn’t have my comrades beside me. I felt invisible, ashamed, and like I had let everyone down.’’

Discovering Ready4Home

Connecting with Ready4Home was a turning point.

‘’Walking into my room was like taking off a heavy pack i’d been carrying for years. The place was clean, safe, and mine. The staff were welcoming, caring and never judged me. It felt like I had a new unit. A team that wanted me to succeed.

Support beyond housing

Ready4Home helped Martin rebuild his life, not just his housing.

‘’They didn’t just give me a bed, they helped me get my benefits sorted, supported me in gaining qualifications for a new career and gave me the confidence I once had when I was serving for the country. They reminded me that my skills were valuable and that I had something to offer.’’

Transitioning to independence

Eventually, Martin moved into his own property with Ready4Home’s support.

‘’They prepared me every step of the way, from managing money to understanding how to run a home. When I finally got my own place, I felt proud again. I had earned it, and I was ready to build a future.

Looking back

Martin now reflects on his journey with gratitude.
